i have been surpised by how many people are pro-seal hunting so i have looked at as much unbiased info as i can, however i am still against it, this is my personal opinion for a variety of reasons, i must admit this includes sentimental reasons aided no doubt by the sensational and sickening footage on t.v but also through my own logical reasoning.
I am interested to hear the reasoning for and against it from others. i kno this is a controversial subject so please no abuse!
everyone has the right to their opinion!

I support it before everyone gives me thumbs down hear me out.

There is a lot of bad information floating around the internet and tv.

Baby seals- it is against regulations to kill seal pups

Skinning alive- it is against regulations to skin a seal alive. Not to mention how hard it is to do if regulations are followed when killing the animal

Endangered- There are 5 million Harp seals alone off the coast of Newfoundland. And that is with an annual seal hunt

Fur- The meat and oil is also taken in addition to the pelts. The meat is rich in omega and 6 so it’s good for the heart. The Greenland diet ( rich in Fish and seal) Is supposed to be very good for the heart. Efforts are being made to promote the meat and oil to prevent wastage. When cooked correctly it’s like moist tender beef.

Clubbing- The majority of seals are shot. The hakipik when used as intended kills and animal quickly.

sport- The seal hunt never has been and never will be a sport.

Of course their is going to be blood on the ice because the animals are prepared outdoors. If farm animals were slaughtered outside there would be the same scene.

What bothers me is the slogan " club sandwiches not seals" So the lives of farm animals are worthless but a seal which is killed for the same purpose is special? Cows are ushered into a slaughter house hit on the head or electrocuted then bled to death. So why is a hamburger okay but flipper pie shocking?

lots of the anti seal hunting footage is edited or staged. There was one case where a person saw the hunt as humane but when he returned wrote how terrible it was. http://www.nfb.ca/webextension/ancestors/media.php?e=3

Most of the posters still have white coat seals on them. These animals cannot be killed.

The Canadian seal hunt is the most regulated seal hunt. If anything the seal hunting nations of Europe and Africa could learn from it.

The seal hunt provides employment to thousands of First Nations and Euro- Canadians. The hunt can provide up to 25% or more of their income. They are not barbarians wishing to destroy all nature. They need the oceans bounty to provide for themselves and their families. If anything they are closer connected to nature then some of the people who protest them.
I am a big supporter of habitat stewardship. It is important to conserve habitat and wildlife for the next generations. But the seal hunt is also important for the lively hood and culture of the people that hunt seals.
I think this all sums up the feelings of the seal hunt http://www.nfb.ca/webextension/ancestors/media.php?e=4
